Office Design Case Study - Flight Safety InternationalWith 600 courses, forty locations, Flight Safety International, train more than 75,000 pilots and other key aviation staff every year. For their 92,000sqft Farnborough, Hampshire facility, which opened in 2005, with a total investment of $240million, they decided there wasn't much difference in cost if they commissioned bespoke furniture which Saracen would make in their own workshops.
Project Details "We didn't want instructors bringing in accumulated manuals and journals and taking up residence at a particular desk," explains assistant centre manager Paul Hewett. "The design of the furniture makes it obvious that it's to be shared. "In addition, Saracen made bespoke lockers which reflect a Flight Safety International ethos. "We're fanatics about looking professional as well as being professional," Paul Hewett explains. "The lockers had to look like office furniture rather than the kind found at a gymnasium. Each of our 120 instructors will have their own locker, but we've discouraged having names on the doors for the sake of appearances. Instead, the lockers have a small round disk with a number. "Again, there was very little difference in the cost of having Saracen build bespoke lockers compared to buying them from a catalogue." For the customer support offices, Flight Safety International shipped over the rosewood veneer desks they use in their US facilities. Saracen were instructed to make storage units to be fixed seamlessly to the furniture when it arrived. "You can't see the join, which says something about their attention to detail," Paul Hewett says. "Office furniture is a very competitive market, and Saracen are fully aware of that. After they price a project for us, they'll go back and sharpen their pencils if it's necessary, but they are always there for us, no job is too small, and we feel that we are getting looked after, that we are getting a proper deal. "If I phone them late afternoon, they're here the next morning. They know what they're talking about, and they've been working here at the weekend at their own cost in order to get things done. I can rely on them for sensible advice and lots of samples to work on. They make it easy for us." A further project for Saracen has been the fitting out of the examination room at the Farnborough facility, which has to have FAA (the US licensing authority) approval.
